Week 14- Science Methods II

 What question are we investigating?

For the fourteenth week of Science Methods II, we would continue to talk more about climate change. This would be through talking about greenhouse gases in lecture. While in discussion we would talk about carbon dioxide and how it has been affected by climate change.

What did we do in lab to investigate this question?

The teacher started by asking the small group members to talk about how their conversations with someone older went for them and what they talked about within their conversations. This would allow me to see how my small group members didn’t have negative conversations with someone older than them and to see how their conversations were similar or different than mine. One example of a difference can be one small group member saying how her dad is someone that builds houses or apartments and how a way to improve his buildings can use solar energy in the future. It also would be important to see how greenhouse gases are important to learn about when it comes to climate change. This would be through watching a video over greenhouse gases and seeing how there are more than one type of gas that is able to get into the Earth. This would be through learning about visible photons that are absorbed in Earth and are remitted in infrared photons which is bad for the climate.

What did we figure out?

Another main part that would be talked about in discussion is carbon dioxide and the three factors that change climate through looking at a graph. Ted would firstly allow everyone to see how observations, natural and human factors, and natural factors only are three main ways to affect climate. The graph would allow everyone to see how human factors are a main difference in how climate is changing and how the other ones aren’t doing anything to change it so it has to be human factors to change the climate. It also would be important to learn about the Albedo Effect which is how much radiation is reflected or absorbed into the Earth’s surface. An example of an experiment to allow students to learn more about the Albedo Effect could be allowing them to use a black and white shirt to put ice cubes on it to see which one will melt faster in the sunlight. This will allow students to get a deeper understanding over the Albedo Effect and see it in their real lives or how it affects them. This lastly, would get me to see how it could affect the continental glaciers and how the Albedo Effect relates to the glaciers melting.

What are new or remaining questions after the investigation?

This discussion taught me more about climate change and to see what greenhouse gases are and how it affects climate change. It also would allow me to see how there are different types of gases like the infrared photons. That would help me when learning about the Albedo Effect and see how this concept relates to greenhouse gases. That would lastly get me to see a real life example with the continental glaciers and how the Albedo Effect affects this.
