Week 10- Science Methods II

 What question are we investigating?

For the ninth week of Science Methods II, we would begin to look at different forms of rocks and how they are created. This would be continued by having Ted continue this discussion and help everyone to know more about this information.

What did we do in lab to investigate this question?

The teacher would start out by allowing everyone to talk about what they know about rocks and what the three forms of rocks could mean. This would help when she presented the experiment which was using starbursts to create the different forms of rocks. That happened by giving each group different materials to use with the starbursts like the flame tool, knife, water, and our hands. It would be important for my group members to start to think of different ways to create these forms of rocks by having them. My group would demonstrate the sedimentary rock by pushing together two pieces of the starbursts with our hands. The igneous rock would be used with the flame tool and this would help my group to see how the metamorphic rock is different compared to using water for creating it. It was also important to talk about the different plate tectonics and how they work differently in the world. The three plate tectonics are called convergent, transform, and divergent plate boundaries.

What did we figure out?

Another important part would be in the lecture on Thursday where we again talked about the different science concepts that were shown in the Monday session. This would allow me to get a better understanding of these different forms of rocks and plate tectonics. This would be done through going through how the different plants work with plate tectonics and to get a better visual for it. An example of this can be how South America and Africa would be able to connect which shows how plate tectonics have moved these places away from each other. It also was important to talk about the three different forms of rocks and how they are able to be created. This would allow me to visually get a better understanding of these three rocks and see how there are only three different ways each one of these rocks could be created. This would be shown by a visual that Ted presented in his slide and showing each part individually when talking through the steps.

What are new or remaining questions after the investigation?

This lab and discussion taught me more about different forms of rocks. This would allow me to get a better understanding of how these different forms of rocks are similar or different in the ways they are able to be created. Lastly, this new information would allow me to want to learn more about these rocks so I’m able to get a better understanding for the future.
