Week 2- Parts of a Flower

 What question are we investigating?

For the second week of Science Methods I, we continued to look at the question “What makes something living?” However, we would look more at the structures of a flower to see what makes something living. We would discuss this in small groups and then have a whole group discussion as a class.

What did we do in lab to investigate this question?

The teacher started the lab by reviewing what we learnt from last week and being able to expand on that information for the next lab. She would then put up a picture of the different parts of the flower to help the small groups be able to critically think about the structures that help flowers be  included as a living thing. In small groups we would pick apart the flower to get more information on the different parts of it. An example of this can be how my small group discussed how the stem is able to get nutrients to the flower and that makes it able to grow.

What did we figure out?

For our whole group discussion, we discussed more about the different requirements that should be included for a living thing. We also would say requirements that we didn’t believe should be on the list anymore. An example of this can be the root system and homeostasis. We still believed however that growth and reproduction should be included on the list of something to be a living thing. This would help me to get a better understanding of the characteristics of what is living or non-living through this lab.

What are new or remaining questions after the investigation?

This lab I got a better understanding of what could be factors of living and non-living things. It also helped me to see how you're able to change your opinion on information on science. This could include how as a whole group we changed the characteristics of living things. Another important part that it showed me is how you're able to gradually show the lesson to the students through the hands-on activities you do in the classroom.
